Participatory Budgeting
Participatory Budgeting
Originating in Brazil in the 1980s, Participatory Budgeting (often simply called PB) is now practiced around the world.
With PB, a part of a community's or even country's budget is ring-fenced to allow citizens direct control over how the money is spent.
Depending on the setup, citizens can either allocate funds to project options recommended by the government or they can come up with ideas directly, have them costed and then voted on by their fellow citizens. PB not only returns budgetary control to citizens, it also helps them understand where their money is spent as well as the interdependencies between different projects.
Watch our explainer video to understand how PB operates, listen to Jez Hall and former mayor Guss O'Connell to hear how it works in practice and then get in touch if you want us to help you select the right partner for your Participatory Budgeting Project.
